  1. Gene Nelson is a despicable excuse for a human being and it’s too bad that the “island police” are useless when a felony is committed! Madeline Island can keep their dog-murdering monster, he has damaged the reputation of the island beyond repair but I suppose the locals are just fine with that. Sounds like it’s always been open season for loose dogs on M.I., and sounds like it will continue to be for those inbred hillbillies.

    • I’ve been going there for several years now every summer but because of this will never step on that island again!!!! Same goes for the whole Ashland county with incompetent DA. If they cover this up, who knows what else would be covered up and it’s no way assuring for tourists who come there to get any justice!

  2. I could not have said it better. I’ve never been to M.I. but never will go there now. Let the community fall apart. Tourism should stop now. Also sounds like palms are greased; it’s all about who you know and who’s intimidating who and who’s afraid of whom. And they talk about cities like Chicago? Seems like M.I. has joined Chicago at the hip. The whole thing makes me sick.

  3. I think it is ridiculous that people are focusing on the leash laws as opposed to the horrific inexcusable indefensible felony of killing someone else’s dog. I’ve been coming up to Madeline for 30 years and it has forever tarnished my view of the island. Dogs get out. It happens. These are cabins and people are constantly going in and out. When loading or unloading your car, the dog can easily get out. That’s what happened to Bruzzo. I am astounded that anyone feels comfortable relying on a leash law as a defense for this felony. I am trying to still love Madeline Island but the haunting memory of this incident and perhaps even more importantly, how it was dealt with after it was known who killed Bruzzo makes it difficult. The DA’s letter is incomprehensible.

  4. This sounds to me like it’s a case of “who you know” “what you know”… The family deserve justice and to be able to put their puppy to rest. I am sure the police department is soooo busy doing nothing. It’s stories like these that will make people not go there to vacation. Hopefully they will lose money as a city due to the negligence of the police department and the DA.

  5. Gene Nelson shot a dog once before and that dog lived. He gave the same lie that got him off the first time. What an incompetent DA and horrible police department! May Karma Bite them all!

  6. There are two sides to every story. Back in the 70s when I lived outside of Bayfield Wisconsin on the Ski Hill Rd., my dog was killed for killing the neighbor’s chickens and that man who knew me for many years did not have the courage to come and tell me. He shot our dog. My wife at the time heard about the killing from idle gossip in town.

I was disappointed and very mad but I also understand as it was just as much my fault as it was the dog’s, as I was warned once and failed to keep the dog chained up.

  7. Oh the Duluth Monitor tell me you don’t know how the law works with saying you don’t know how the law works. Just pandering to anything to serve your fake news agenda
